Union Pacific dispatched a rotary set today from Roseville, CA as the WRVTKF-25. They departed at 10am and made it to Colfax around noon. After waiting for a utility crew to remove some downed wires from the tracks about 10 miles east, they finally departed Colfax shortly before 3pm. I chased it up to Gold Run where the snow started to really come down and stick to the roads so I headed back home to lower elevations. Enjoy the photos!

The Central Oregon and Pacific railroad has been in a transition of locomotive power in the last few months. My first view of the CORP was in 1999 while attending the College of the Siskiyous and I documented many of the bright red GP38-3s. Over the last twelve years, the Geeps have been a constant fixture. In the last few days of February 2011, the last active 3800-series GP38-3 left the CORP for other RailAmerica properties. A new era will begin when my travels again take me to Weed, CA and I find the new motive power.

Not your usual update this time... I live within a few miles of the Sacramento light rail (SacRT) and periodically see light rail vehicle shells at Roseville being transported to the Siemens plant in Sacramento. Just last weekend I saw one that was fully wrapped but others are transported exposed. Also included are a few shots of light rail action at the Sunrise Blvd. station when it was new in 2007.

This update contains photos taken five years ago in the small Northern California town of McCloud. I hope you enjoy these photos of one of my favorite shortline railroads!

Union Pacific has been working on rebuilding a large group of EMD SD40-2 locomotives. I read they plan to refurbish 500 and a few have already made it out to Northern California. I have not yet photographed them but I wanted to put together an update with a few photos of SD40-2s taken in the last decade.

Last Friday, I had kept an eye on the HeadsUpNorCal group's tracking of the UP #1983 "WP Heritage" unit because it was working a ballast train near Oroville, CA which was near the our destination for a weekend getaway. There was little play in the schedule to head out of the way to catch it but lucky for us, its departure was delayed by a few hours. We saw it heading towards us between Sheridan and Marysville, CA. A quick jump off the highway and sprint back towards Sheridan netted us a few shots. The pacing shot's photo credit belongs my wife.
